Mcgachey Played For West Adelaide Hellas Soccer Club

In 1968, Neil Mcgachey joined the West Adelaide Hellas Soccer Club. During his playing year, he was the game’s icon in South Australia.

He got a season train pass from Elizabeth West’s Womma railway station to North Adelaide while joining the club.

During that period, the state government promised Neil and his family a location for their club. West Adelaide ultimately acquired a home base with the team in 2015, with the goal of moving into the new Kilburn Sports Complex.

As a player, Neil appeared in 138 NSL matches for West Adelaide. For his ability to control games, he was named the Australian Press NSL Player of the Year in 1978.

The club was a founder member of the NSL, Australia’s first national football league tournament, in 1977. They got the honour of scoring the NSL’s inaugural goal on April 2, 1977.

Neil was back in the lineup the following year, along with goalie Martyn Crook. West Adelaide’s coach, John Margaritis, was first hired, but he was replaced by Mcgachey after 10 rounds in the first match of the 1978 season.

When he accepted the club’s coaching position, he was also a fan favourite among the players. In 1978, the squad won their first and only NSL championship under his guidance.

The following year, he was named a finalist for South Australian Sports Star of the Year. He also received the Advertiser Golden Boos Award.
