Andy Murray/Angelique Kerber

  • Britain’s Andy Murray and Germany’s Angelique Kerber were named ITF World Champions on December 13, 2016.
  • Murray, whose brother Jamie was named doubles World Champion along with Brazil’s Bruno Soares, won Wimbledon in July before becoming the first player to win two Olympic singles gold medals when he retained his crown in Rio de Janeiro in August.
  • He won nine titles in a milestone year that ended with him beating rival Novak Djokovic to win the ATP Tour Finals and seal the year-end rankings top spot.

  • Gujarat’s 26-year-old opening batsman Samit Gohel broke a Gujarat’s 26-year-old opening batsman Samit Gohel broke a 117-year-old record in first-class cricket by notching-up the highest score while carrying his bat through the innings of 359 not out during his team’s Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Odisha on December 27, 2016.
  • Gohel’s 723-ball-knock had 45 boundaries and a six but the shy boy from Gujarat-‘s dairy hub Anand was very unassuming.

Jeje Lalpekhlua

  • Jeje Lalpekhlua has been nominated as the ‘2016. AIFF Player of the Year’. The announcement was made at the AIFF Annual General Body Meeting held at the AIFF Football House.
  • He has been presented with a prize of Rs 2.5 lakh along with the glittering trophy. Sasmita Malik was conferred with the 2016 AIFF Woman Footballer of the Year. The Odisha-based footballer will be bestowed with a prize of Rs 2 lakh besides a trophy.

Pankaj Advani

  • Sixteen-time world champion Pankaj Advani ended the year on a high by bagging the National title in 6-red Snooker, the shorter format of the game, in Mumbai on December 24, 2016.
  • Advani is the only player in the world to win all titles (National, Continental and World) in 6-red Snooker.
  • On his debut, the ace cueist won the IBSF World 6-red Snooker Championship in Egypt in 2014 and successfully defended it the following year.

Cristiano Ronaldo

  • Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo beat rival Lionel Messi to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or award for a fourth time on December 12, 2016.
  • He has now won the Ballon d’Or in 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2016, with Messi the only other recipient of the award since winning it for the first time in 2009.
  • HRs scored his first international goal in Euro 2004 and helped Portugal reach the final he took over captaincy in July, 2008, and he led Portugal to the semi-finals at Euro 2012, finishing the competition as joint-top scorer.
  • In November, 2014, Ronaldo became the all-time top scorer in the UEFA European Championship (including qualifying) with 23 goals.

Iqbal Sayed

  • Mumbai’s Iqbal Sayed has successfully won the silver medal at the Mr. Olympia amateur event held in Hong Kong on December 9, 2016.
  • The 2015 Mr. Mumbai runner-up defeated as many as 20 countries in the Classic Bodybuilding category to finish second.
  • A civil engineer with Reliance Infrastructure and Mumbai Metro, the 27-year old’s secures international glory for India in his very first competition.
