Sports Ministry Suspendsed IOA

  • The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was suspended by the Sports Ministry after failing to respond to the showcase notice issued to it questioning the decision to confer life Presidency on Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay Chautala on December 31, 2016.
  • While, Kalmadi voluntarily refused the position till he is absolved of all corruption charges, Chautala has been defiant, claiming he would give up the post only if asked to do so by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

AIBA Granted Full Membership to Boxing Federation of India

  • The AIBA unanimously granting full membership to the recently-formed Boxing Federation of India (BFI) at a meeting on the sidelines of its 70th anniversary gala in Montreux (Switzerland) on December 21, 2016.
  • India’s international suspension for the past four years had resulted in the isolation of the country’s boxers, who Were deprived of foreign exposure for most part.
  • The lack of competitive boxing was a major factor in the boxers’ medal-less Olympic campaign in Rio after only three made the cut, a sharp decline from the eight who participated in the 2012 edition.
  • But with AIBA formally recognising the new federation, the opportunities in international training-cum-competition events are set to increase for Indian boxers.

Cheerleading and Muay Thai Granted Provisional Recognition as Olympic Sports

  • Cheerleading and the martial art of Muay Thai received provisional recognition as Olympic sports on December 9, 2016.
  • The two sports will receive $ 25000 (£ 19700) in annual funding from the International Olympic Committee.
  • They can apply to become part of the Olympic Games sports programme after three years.
  • The International Cheer Union (ICU) has more than 100 national federations and nearly 4.5 million registered athletes.
  • Muay Thai is an organisation with 135 national federations, nearly 60 are recognised by their national Olympic committees and nearly 400000 registered athletes.
