  • Aditi Ashok, a 17-year-old Bangalore girl made history on August 22, 2015 by becoming the first from India to win the Ladies British Amateur stroke play golf championship at the Moortown Golf Club at England.
  • Currently 52nd in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, Aditi beat 39 players from around 30 countries.
  • She had earlier won the St. Rule Trophy at St. Andrews in July, 2015 and finished second in the 2015 European Women’s Amateur Championship.
  • She also claimed the overall title called ‘The Nicholls Trophy’ as well as the ‘Dinwiddy Trophy’ given for the lowest score by an U-18 player.

Union Government Recognised Yoga as Sports Discipline

  • The Sports Ministry decided on September 1, 2015 to recognize ‘Yoga’ as a sports discipline and place it in the ‘Priority’ category, upgrade Fencing from ‘Others’ to ‘General’ category based on the past performance in major international event and to place ‘University Sports’ in the ‘Priority’ category.
  • The sports disciplines included in the multi discipline mega events like Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games etc and which have obtained a ranking up to 8th in individual events and up to 10th in the team events in Olympics/Asian Games/CWG or their respective Asian and World Championships shall be placed in ‘General’ category.
  • Financial assistance for this category will be done in the way that National Championships are to be funded, One international event in India in a year, can be funded and a Maximum of one foreign exposure each in Senior and Junior categories can also be funded during a year.

Indian Women Hockey Team Qualified for Olympics after 36 Years

  • Indian women’s hockey team qualified on August 29, 2015 for next year’s Rio Games, courtesy England making it to the final of the EuroHockey Championships in London. The team will return to the Olympics after a long gap of 36 years.
  • India took the quota place on the basis of its fifth-place finish in the women’s Hockey World League Semifinals in Antwerp, Belgium in the month of July, 2015. In this regard, International Hockey Federation (FIH) confirmed that Indian women’s team has qualified for the Rio Games.
  • 10 women’s team qualified for 2016 Rio Olympics in total. They are China, Great Britain, Germany, Australia, the Netherlands New Zealand and the USA through the Hockey World League Semi-Finals, South Korea as Asian Games champions, Argentina as Pan Am Games champions and India.

AB de Villiers broke Sourav Ganguly’s 12-year-old Record

  • South Africa’s captain AB de Villiers broke Sourav Ganguly’s record during the 3rd ODI against New Zealand at Kingsmead on August 26, 2015. With this he became the fastest to score 8000 ODI runs.
  • He needed 182 innings to cross 8000-run mark while Ganguly took 200 visits to the crease. The record had stood in Ganguly’s name since 2002.
  • He played his first ODI on February 2, 2005, needed 10 years and 205 days to reach here while Ganguly took 10 years and 302 days (from January 11, 1992 to November 9, 2002).
  • AB de Villiers now has 8045 runs in 190 ODIs (182 innings). He has hit 10 hundreds and 4 half centuries. De Villiers also holds the fastest ODI hundred and quickest to 150 records.

IOC gave Olympic Sport Recognition to ‘Frisbee’

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on August 2, 2015 fully recognised the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF), ultimate frisbee’s governing body, during its 128th session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
  • Ultimate frisbee is now eligible for IOC funding and can compete with other sports for inclusion in future Olympic games. This is an incredible milestone in the 30 year history of WFDF. Frisbee is the sport of flying disc. It became popular in the 1960s and 70s.
  • Presently, the WFDF governs several Frisbee events including Beach Ultimate, Ultimate Frisbee and field events.
  • It was considered as Olympic sport after WFDF had meet all the criteria including having 62 national federations members and gender equality.
