As a freshman at West Virginia, McAfee got the starting job. As a freshman, he made 11 of 18 field goals and had 70 kickoffs with 20 touchbacks. McAfee was invited to the 2009 Senior Bowl in Alabama after his senior year at WVU. He went with fellow Mountaineers Pat White and Ellis Lankster.
