Jaroslav Spacek: Retirement

After thirteen years of playing in the National Hockey League, defenseman Jaroslav Spacek has revealed his intention to hang up his skates.

According to isport.cz (via The Examiner), Spacek chose not to return to the Philadelphia Flyers despite the fact that the team expressed interest in signing him. Spacek cited his family and ongoing back troubles as the reasons for his decision.

After being dealt by the Montreal Canadiens to the Carolina Hurricanes in December of last year, Spacek played out the rest of his career with the Hurricanes. Because of the lockout, he was able to become a free agent at the conclusion of the previous season but has decided not to look for a new team at this time.

The defenceman spent his career in the National Hockey League (NHL), playing for seven different teams before making his debut with the Florida Panthers in 1998.

Following his departure from Florida in 2006, he skated for the Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Buffalo Sabres, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, and Carolina Hurricanes, among other teams.

He competed for the Czech Republic in the Winter Olympics on two separate occasions. He took home the gold medal at the 1998 Games in Nagano and the bronze medal at the 2002 Games in Torino.

Spacek amassed a solid total of 355 points throughout the course of his career, which included playing 880 games.

The player, who is 38 years old, is the first to lose their job as a result of the lockout, which has the potential to cut short the careers of many older players.
