Browning won the Canadian and World Championships in figure skating four times. He represented Canada in three Winter Olympics, finishing eighth overall in 1988, sixth in 1992, and fifth in 1994, and was given the honour of carrying the Canadian flag at the opening ceremonies of the 1994 games in Lillehammer, Norway. Browning also won three Canadian Professional Championships and three World Professional Championships.

Browning landed the first recognised quadruple jump, a toe loop, in the competition on March 25, 1988, at the 1988 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. This achievement is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Jozef Sabovk had previously landed a quad toe loop at the 1986 European Championships, which was initially acknowledged but ultimately ruled ineligible three weeks later.

Later, Browning stated, “I recall a couple guys landing the jump (in practise) long before I did, and watching them spurred me to try it myself. I certainly expected more skaters to start performing it in competition after landing it. That did not happen in the following years, which astonished me.” Browning is also recognised for his intricate, quick, and often humorous footwork.
