Prem Kumar

  • India’s Prem Kumar bagged a silver in long jump on February-22, 2016 at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships held at Doha. Prem Kumar cleared a creditable 7.92 in in his final attempt. Zhang Yaoguang of China won the gold with a best effort of 7.99 m.
  • Om Prakash Singh Karhana added a bronze in shot put by clearing a distance of 18.77 m. With this, the Indians signed off their campaign in Doha totally with 1 Gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals.
  • Jharkhand capital Ranchi has been confirmed by the continental body as host city of 2017 Asian Athletics (Outdoor) Championships.

Brendon McCullum

  • Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand captain struck the fastest ever test century on February 20, 2016.
  • He played his 101st and final test, reached his 12th test century from just 54 balls. He achieved this feat on in his final international match on day one of the Second Test Match between Australia and New Zealand at Christchurch. With this score, he broke previous record held by Viv Richards and Misbah-ui-Haq made in 56 balls.

Asad Rauf

  • Tainted Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf was banned for five years by the BCCI on February 12, 2016 after its disciplinary committee found him guilty of corrupt practices and bringing the game into disrepute.
  • He was banned as per the Pakistani guilty of .”misconduct and corruption within the meaning of Article 2.2.2, 2.3.2, 2.3.3 and 2.4.1 of the BCCI Anti Corruption Code”. So, he was banned from umpiring or playing or representing cricket in any form or anyway being associated with the activities of the Board and its Affiliates.
  • He was part of the ICC’s elite panel and officiated in Test matches, was accused of accepting expensive gifts from bookies besides placing bets on IPL matches in the 2013 edition.

Joshna Chinappa

  • Star player Joshna Chinappa clinched the gold in women’s individual squash after beating Maria Toorpaki Wizir (Pakistan) on February 8, 2016 at the South Asian Games.
  • With Chinappa’s gold, India has so far won three medals in squash with Sourav Ghosal and Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu having grabbed a bronze each after losing to their Pakistani opponents on February 7, 2016.
  • With this she became first Indian squash player to win individual gold medal in 2016 SAG. Nasir Iqbal of Pakistan won the on the gold medal in men’s individual category by defeating Farhan Zaman of Pakistan.

12th South Asian Games Held

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 12th South Asian Games that held from February 6 to 17, 2016 at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium, Guwahati, Assam. Held under the aegis of South Asian Olympics Council.
  • The 12-day event is being jointly hosted by Guwahati and Meghalaya capital, Shillong. More than 2600 athletes from eight countries i.e., Afghanistan, Bangladesh. Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, besides India vyed for the top honours in the Games.
  • The ‘Gender Equal Games’ will have 23 disciplines and 228 events, with all the sports having both men and women’s sections for the first time, making this edition the biggest ever sporting spectacle in South Asia.
