Sheri Holm, her maiden name, accepted Steve’s marriage proposal in February 1984, while they were both students at UCLA. That July, they started planning their wedding.
Trying to schedule a wedding around soccer was exhausting. The date was pushed back several times until being set for February 1985.

On December 4, 2014, Steve Sampson was hired as the head men’s soccer coach at California Polytechnic State University.
2011
He was linked to the vacant coaching position of the Vietnam national football team in 2011, but it did not work out.
2010
Sampson stated in February 2010 that Harkes was pulled from the 1998 World Cup due to an affair between John Harkes and Amy Wynalda, the wife of US striker Eric Wynalda.
Sampson ultimately cleared the air after Eric Wynalda confirmed the reports during a talk regarding the position for the English National team in the lead up to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
2004
Costa Rica was placed 17th in the world in 2004, its highest ever at the time. Sampson was fired after Costa Rica required the away goals tiebreaker to beat Cuba in the second round of World Cup qualification in 2006.
On August 18, 2004, Sampson was hired as the LA Galaxy’s coach, succeeding Sigi Schmid. Despite having a lot of skill, the squad remained uneven the rest of the year and battled for a long time in 2005. Many of the players brought in by Sampson were absent from the Galaxy roster owing to national team obligations for the United States, Costa Rica, and Guatemala.
The Galaxy progressed during the season and eventually won the “double” of the US Open Cup and the MLS Cup, the latter as the lowest seed in the playoffs. The Galaxy were unable to build on their 2005 season success, and Sampson was fired on June 6, 2006, when Alexi Lalas, who played under Sampson on the US National Team, was appointed president.
2002
Sampson was hired as the head coach of Costa Rica’s national team in 2002. In his first international assignment, he helped Costa Rica go undefeated in the 2003 UNCAF Nations Cup. Costa Rica also came in fourth place in the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
1998
Sampson led the squad to a second-place finish in the 1998 Gold Cup, including a historic 1-0 semi-final triumph over Brazil.
The United States National Team performed admirably in the 1998 World Cup qualifying stages, ending with an 8-6-2 overall record.
The 1998 World Cup would be more difficult. Playing against Germany and Yugoslavia was far more harder than in CONCACAF qualification. In preparation for the Germany encounter, Sampson switched to an unconventional 3-6-1 system in the spring of 1998, attempting to counter the quality of the German midfield. His squad conceded a goal from a corner in the first half owing to an error by Mike Burns at the front post, thus his conservative approach almost succeeded.
When Sampson switched to a different style in the second half, his squad showed potential but was thwarted by an amazing strike from Jürgen Klinsmann. The team was defeated 2-0. The second encounter against Iran saw a feisty team that was unable to find the back of the net. The US squad struck the crossbar and post five times on way to a 2-1 loss in their most important encounter. Counter-attack goals got the better of the United States, who were trying to recover from their loss to Germany and the player discontent that followed. Brian McBride scored the lone goal. The team defeated 1-0 to Yugoslavia after substantial personnel changes. Sampson resigned as coach on June 29, 1998, after failing to win a game and finishing last.
1995
When Milutinovi stepped down after the World Cup, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) selected Sampson as temporary coach in April 1995.
However, after leading the United States to a surprising fourth-place finish at the Copa América 1995, including a 3-0 romp over Argentina and a quarterfinal victory over archrivals Mexico, Sampson was promoted to full-time national team coach in August 1995.
1993
Sampson left Santa Clara to work as an assistant to Bora Milutinovic on the United States national team in 1993, and he was on the team when the United States hosted the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
In addition to coaching, he was the World Cup organization’s Vice President/Competition Management.
1985
Santa Clara University hired him away from UCLA at the end of the 1985 season to be their men’s soccer head coach. His greatest success as a college coach came in 1989, when he led Santa Clara to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship.
In the final, Santa Clara faced Virginia, who was managed by Bruce Arena, who would eventually follow Sampson as head coach of the United States men’s national soccer team. Santa Clara and Virginia battled through regular time and four overtimes before NCAA officials called a timeout, much to the chagrin of the players and two coaches, and named Santa Clara and Virginia co-champions. Sampson was selected NCAA Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year in 1989.

1982
He attended Stanford University after graduating from San Jose State, where he earned a master’s degree in education from the Stanford Graduate School of Education. During his time at Stanford, he worked as a coach for the Awalt High School boys varsity soccer team in Mountain View, California.
He then worked as an assistant men’s soccer coach at Foothill College after graduating from Stanford. UCLA hired Sampson as an assistant men’s soccer coach in 1982. He was on staff when UCLA won the NCAA men’s soccer championship in 1985.
1975
Sampson briefly attended UCLA before transferring to Foothill Community College in Los Altos Hills, California in 1975. He earned All-American honours at Foothill Community while playing on the 1976 California junior college state championship team.
In 1977, he transferred to San Jose State University. In 1979, he graduated from San Jose State with a minor in Spanish, which he later used as coach of Costa Rica’s national soccer team.
