e-Visa for Tourists from 37 More Nations

  • Electronic Tourist Visas (e-TVs) extended to citizens of 37 more countries from February 26, 2016, taking the total number to 150 countries. Since, the launch of the scheme in November, 2014, 7,5 lakh e-visas have been issued till now.
  • The new additions are Albania, Austria, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Botswana, Brunei, Bulgaria, Cape Verde, Comoros, Cote d’Ivoire, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Eritrea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Greece, Guinea, Iceland, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Moldova, Namibia, Romania, San Marino, Senegal Serbia, Slovakia. South Africa, Swaziland, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Trinidad & Tobago, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • Visitors from the UK accounted for 23.93% of the e-TVs issued during last November, followed by those from the USA (16.33%), Russia (8.17%), France (7.64%), Germany (5.6%) and Australia (4.82%). Canada had a share of 4.71%, China 3,26%, Ukraine 2.03% and the Netherlands 1.75%.

Parliament Passed Law Giving Voting Rights to People Transferred in Land Swap with Bangladesh

  • The parliament passed a bill on February 26, 2016 that grants voting rights to people who became citizens of the country following the exchange of enclaves between India and Bangladesh, with the Rajya Sabha giving its nod to the measure without debate.
  • Law Minister DV Sadananda Gowda moved the Election Laws (Amendment) BilL 2016 for j consideration and passage in the Upper House I and the members passed it by a voice vote without any discussion.
  • The bill, which was adopted by the Lok Sabha on February 25, 2016, seeks to amend Section-11 of the Delimitation Act, 2002 and Section-9 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
  • The measure would enable the Election Commission to carry out limited delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal following the exchange of 51 Bangladeshi and 111 Indian enclaves in July, 2015.
